About Girl and the Kitchen
Hi! I’m Mila, the Girl and the Kitchen.
And I believe in Good Food. Done Right!
Having worked in many incredible restaurant kitchens as a chef, I know what it takes to make wholesome and delicious food with simple ingredients and bright flavors! I believe that anyone can make great tasting food by knowing a few of the tips of the trade. Read along with me as I teach you how to prepare incredibly tasty and wholesome meals made with simple ingredients that are loaded with flavor in no time at all!
Most importantly I know how to keep your food delicious and wholesome! In fact I even created an entire Bill of Rights for it called “The Foodamentals.”
Who am I?
I am the recipe developer, writer, photographer and chef of this blog! Girl and the Kitchen is also a thriving private chef and boutique catering company in the Chicago area, specializing in servicing many homes on the North Shore. (Interested in our services, check out how we can cook for you here!)
I am a mommy to a gorgeous girl named Charlie and my sweet youngest son Marcel and wife to my loving and wonderful husband, Mark. They are frequent guest stars on this blog. I have always created a culture in our family that to love is to cook and to cook is to love. But most importantly, I believe that it is important to eat well and wholesomely.
I also have a dirty little secret…I am OBSESSED with reality tv! I love all things Bravo and TLC! I even watch them on my iPad while I cook…as a crazy busy professional, mom and wife… this is the only way I can get all my shows in 🙂 My husband thinks I am nuts but this is just my vice…take it or leave it 🙂
Everyday I take my passion for cooking and wellness and my knowledge as a chef and turn it into incredible recipes for my friends and family. My recipes are always full of flavor, made of fresh ingredients and incredibly delicious! Most importantly, all the recipes you will find here are designed, tested, and created by yours truly, and taste-tested by my family and friends!
From Culinary Grad to Top Private Chef
As a cooking school graduate, I chose blogging and private cheffing over restaurant cooking because I wanted to share the tips, tweaks, and tricks I had learned in school. And while I love explaining how something works or why a certain technique is used in a recipe, you will find that many of my favorite recipes on here are my mom’s and busbushka’s recipes. Because that is where the heart and soul of cooking really lies for me. It also shaped my cooking mantra: Good Food. Done Right!
Through this blog, I not only get to share my recipes, but I also get to share my experiences with private cheffing and how they changed the way I look at food and the responsibility I have to teach people what Good Food. Done Right. actually means.
Good Food. Done Right.
I have been very fortunate to have always innately known how and what to eat. I always knew that processed food was the way to an extremely unhealthy and inactive life. In my quest to find the least torturous way of eating I did all the diets:
As a result of all my years of research and self experimentation, I have compiled a list of my Foodamentals in an effort to teach people what Good Food. Done Right really means and stands for.
In the end, I found out the best way of eating was what I already knew. Eat whole food in normal portions. Nourish yourself and be kind to your body. No magic. No fancy diets. Just the good ole’ advice my mom and grandmother always gave me. Eat homemade food that makes you happy and healthy and as my mom so frequently said to me in her strong Russian accent:
“Don’t get crazy.”
Good Food. Done Right! It’s as simple and as uncomplicated as it gets. In a nutshell: eat delicious whole foods that lack in chemical processing and are full of bright, nutritious flavors.
Cooking is Fun
No matter what you are cooking it should be fun and easy, not complicated and finicky! My best recipes are born from the heart and always have a great story that comes along with them. I believe that no matter what I cook, I will always make sure my guests bellies are full of delicious food and aching from laughter!
“Never a foodie. Always a chef. Typically healthy. Sometimes a disaster. Slightly neurotic. Severely Russian. Somewhat American. Frequently dramatic. Forever in love. These are my recipes and stories about my affair with food, love, life and a little bit of crazy. ”
