One of the perks of being a blogger is getting to review really awesome products! I was recently contacted by a creative, Chicago based company, Home Chef! They have a unique concept on food delivery. They contacted me and asked if they can send some samples of their products. I of course agreed, because hey, who turns down free food!?! Not me.
Relished is brilliant because they do all the shopping, prepping, measuring and chopping for you. Each week there are different menus that are created by Home Chef’s executive chef. All of their ingredients are fresh and local and best of all they are bought by someone else. The price is actually quite good considering the quality of the ingredients as well as the portion size.
I had forgotten that I had agreed to this until one day a large square box showed up at my doorstep with their cute green Relished logo on it. Inside was cute environment, friendly green bags that had labels on them such as chicken marsala, dandelion salad and whitefish. Inside a freezer packed bag was the chicken and whitefish. Brilliant! Now what?
As I continued searching my little box of treats, I found recipe cards with step by step photos and a description of what I was supposed to make. What an absolutely genius idea! They did all the prep work. Measured and washed everything and I all have to do is follow the simple instructions to have a gourmet meal at home.
However, seeing as how I am a trained chef and can do this type of cooking on a whim, I decided it was unfair to test these recipes out. So being the good friend that I am, I gave it to my good friends Stan and Lily to test out.
They of course were as happy as I was to receive free food. And they made the recipes for dinner that night.
They said the flavors were outstanding and everything did indeed taste fresh. The recipe cards provided step by step instructions that were extremely easy to follow.
Stan was surprised by how good the dandelion salad was and said he will pick some for his salads next summer out of his yard instead of murdering them with weed killer.
Lilly really enjoyed the white fish and said the portion was more than enough for two people. Being a dietitian she was a bit concerned with the high caloric values on this recipe, but if some of the butter is omitted the problem is solved. And besides butter is awesome. Plus it was served with some pan roasted veggies that is likely to absorb some of that fat right?
They shared a few bites of the chicken marsala and actually had enough to eat for lunch the next day because they were so stuffed.
Personally, I think this is a brilliant idea! It’s ideal for people with a crazy hectic schedule who have no time to shop and still want to need freshly made food. The cost is definitely less than going out to eat each night. And it’s a lot more impressive to serve this to your significant other than a take out box…plus you can make it look like you did all the work… this can be your dirty little secret 🙂 I won’t tell.
